Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) is seeking a Principal Cloud Architect to help customers migrate VMware estates to OCI and plan broader data center migrations and exits. This customer-facing role partners with sales, engineering, product teams and delivery partners to design, demonstrate and deploy architectures that address customer business needs and accelerate OCI adoption.
Customers need practical migration paths that account for application dependencies, operational requirements and business timelines. You will help them evaluate Oracle Cloud VMware Solution (OCVS) and other OCI services, preserve existing VMware operating practices where appropriate, and identify opportunities to modernize applications and infrastructure as part of the migration or over time.
You will own the technical architecture and validation activities for assigned engagements, working with customers from discovery and assessment through proof of concept, deployment planning and adoption. You will translate current-state assessments into future-state architectures and a feasible migration plan for the wider estate.
What You Will DoAssess current-state architecture. Document customer infrastructure, including VMware and other virtualization platforms, application dependencies, capacity, security and operational requirements. Identify migration constraints, risks and success criteria with customer architects and infrastructure teams.
Define future-state architecture. Develop target architectures using OCVS and other OCI services, and identify the gaps and transition steps from the current state. Evaluate workload placement and modernization options based on application suitability, cost, performance and operational needs.
Support data center migrations and exits. Build phased migration approaches that address workloads beyond VMware, shared services, connectivity and dependencies. Collaborate on migration waves, cutover, rollback and validation plans that support consolidation and full data center exits.
Validate the solution. Create demonstrations, prototypes and proofs of concept to test architecture assumptions and migration approaches. Use hands-on configuration, scripting and automation to resolve technical questions and document results.
Guide implementation and adoption. Provide technical guidance through deployment planning and execution, coordinating with customers and delivery partners. Help resolve architecture issues and support operational readiness, knowledge transfer and OCI consumption.
Contribute reusable expertise. Create reference architectures, migration guidance and technical assets. Share lessons with peers and provide customer feedback to product and engineering teams to improve solutions and address gaps.
What We Are Looking ForWe are looking for an experienced cloud architect with strong VMware and enterprise infrastructure knowledge, practical migration experience, and the ability to turn customer requirements into designs that can be implemented and validated.
Experience documenting current-state architectures, defining future-state enterprise infrastructure or cloud architectures, and developing migration roadmaps that connect them.
Experience planning and executing large-scale on-premises-to-cloud migrations, including full data center exits, using a mix of VMware and cloud-native solutions.
Strong knowledge of VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), vSphere and vCenter, with familiarity across VMware networking, storage, availability and migration tooling.
Experience with one or more alternative virtualization or container platforms, such as KVM, Microsoft Hyper-V, Nutanix AHV, Red Hat OpenShift or Kubernetes, is valuable, including evaluating workload portability and migration tradeoffs.
Ability to design across compute, storage, networking, identity and security, including connectivity between on-premises environments and cloud services.
Experience assessing application dependencies, planning migration waves and addressing business continuity, disaster recovery and operational readiness.
Ability to compare migration and modernization options, including retaining VMware environments, rehosting workloads and adopting managed or cloud-native services where appropriate.
Hands-on experience with infrastructure as code, scripting or automation, and the ability to build demonstrations and proofs of concept.
Ability to explain architecture tradeoffs, migration risks and cost considerations to technical and business stakeholders, and to work effectively across sales, engineering and delivery teams.
Experience with OCI and OCVS is particularly relevant. Familiarity with VMware HCX, NSX, vSAN, Terraform, hybrid cloud networking, and migrations involving databases or enterprise applications is valuable. Experience supporting data center consolidation or exits and application modernization is also beneficial.
The Person We Are Looking ForYou start with the customer’s business goals and work through the technical details needed to achieve them. You can independently drive architecture work for assigned engagements, recognize when specialist input is needed, and collaborate across teams to resolve issues. You build customer confidence through sound technical judgment, clear communication and hands-on validation.
You are comfortable balancing migration speed, cost and operational continuity with opportunities for modernization. You document decisions and share what you learn so others can apply successful approaches.
SuccessSuccess is measured by customer progress and adoption:
Customer opportunities advanced through documented current-state assessments, agreed future-state architectures and successful technical validation.
VMware and other enterprise workloads deployed on OCI, contributing to new and expanded OCI consumption.
Migration plans and validated solutions that help customers meet agreed data center consolidation or exit milestones.
Customer objectives for cost, performance, resilience, security and operational readiness addressed through appropriate designs.
Reusable technical assets and engagement lessons that help the team deliver consistently.
